Best DIY Ways to Purify Water Off-Grid?

Looking for practical, low-tech ways to purify water off-grid that don't rely on constant commercial filter replacements. Solar stills, sand filters, biofilters—I’ve heard mixed reviews on each. Anyone here have firsthand experience with reliability and maintenance for these methods in long-term situations? I’m especially curious about systems that can be built from materials most folks already have around. What’s worked (or not worked) for you when the grid’s down for the count?
 
Sand and charcoal biofilters have worked best for me—minimal parts, just need to swap out the charcoal every so often. Ever try adding a solar still into your setup?

Swapping out the charcoal regularly is key, you’re right—sometimes folks overlook just how quickly those filters can get clogged if the water’s murky to start with. I’ve actually rigged a simple solar still before, but found it’s slow going if you need more than a cup or two a day. Ever combine a sand/charcoal filter with a still, CeruleanScribe? Curious if using both would help with
