Can’t narrow it down to just three without feeling like I’m leaving something vital behind, but I’ll give it a try! First has to be a water filter—Sawyer Mini lives in my pack because clean water’s never guaranteed. Next is a sturdy multitool since it’s saved me in more situations than I can count, from food to first aid to little repairs. Third is a small first aid kit that I keep adding to after every gardening mishap or hiking trip—bandages, ointments, some Tylenol, that sort of thing. I know folks love their fancy tech, but old-school basics make me feel most prepared.

One thing I always debate is whether to pack a compact stove or just stick with matches and a pot. What do others do about cooking on the go? It’s tricky balancing weight and usefulness, especially as I get older and can’t carry as much as I used to.

I’m with you—water filter and multitool never leave my bag. I skip the stove, just bring waterproof matches and a titanium cup; keeps it lighter for longer treks. Anyone swear by those tiny alcohol stoves?
