What’s Your Top “Must Have” Prep for Power Outages?

When the grid goes down, what’s the one item you absolutely wouldn’t want to be without? I’ve been looking into battery banks and small solar chargers, but curious if folks here prioritize light, comms, or something else entirely. My hand crank radio’s decent, but doesn’t do much for lighting or charging. Do you have a favorite piece of kit that’s proven itself during an extended outage? Always interested to hear what’s actually worked for people—recommendations welcome.

Can’t beat a reliable LED lantern—safe, long-lasting, and enough light for reading or card games. Anyone found a rechargeable one that actually holds a charge for months?

Absolute must for me is a sturdy solar charger paired with a couple good rechargeable AA or AAA batteries. I rely on it to keep my basic lanterns and radio running, plus it doesn’t take up much space. Have noticed that some “cheap” solar panels struggle in cloudy weather though…anyone have a model that works decently even on overcast days?

Biggest lifesaver for me has been my old-fashioned oil lamp—doesn’t rely on batteries or sunshine, just a bit of lamp oil and a match. I keep a few lanterns charged too, but honestly, I grab that lamp first when the power’s out. Found it surprisingly bright and comforting, especially during long outages. Anyone else keep backups that aren’t electric at all?
