What's your go-to method for purifying water in a survival situation and why?

Boiling has always been my tried-and-true method, mostly because it doesn’t require much else beyond a way to make fire and a pot. I like knowing that with a bit of patience, I can trust the water to be safe after a rolling boil for a few minutes. When I’m out foraging or camping, I’ll sometimes add a few drops of tinctured oregano or thyme after boiling—the oils have antimicrobial properties, and it helps with the taste, too.

Filters are handy for on-the-go, but I’m always a little wary about relying just on commercial filter straws. I’ve seen a few clog up or fail after a while, especially if the water’s murky with leaf debris. Herbalist in me also leans toward wild charcoal and sand filters if I have to improvise. Had decent luck with that
