What’s Your Go-To Skill for SHTF Scenarios?

When it comes to SHTF, the one skill I lean on most is basic field medicine—especially wound care with minimal supplies. After that, I try to keep my foraging knowledge sharp so I can identify edible and medicinal plants quickly if resources run thin. Curious what everyone else considers their core strength in a crisis. Is it firecraft, water purification, self-defense, or something less obvious? Would love to hear what you’ve actually practiced under stress, not just read about.

Canning and safe food storage, hands down—nothing beats opening your own jars when stores aren’t an option. Anyone else focus on preserving skills, or is that too niche?

Can’t argue with the value of field medicine—cleaning and stitching wounds with minimal gear is harder than most folks think, especially under pressure. For me, water purification has become second nature, probably because I’ve gardened for years and pay close attention to water sources. I use everything from old-fashioned boiling to makeshift charcoal filters when I practice. That said, I envy your foraging—identifying wild edibles reliably is a real art, and something I’m still working on. Ever had to rely solely on wild plants, or do you combine them with stored food?
