Best Way to Store Water Long-Term—What Works for You?

Long-term water storage is something I’m revisiting, especially with how unpredictable things are lately. I’ve used both food-grade barrels and glass jugs, but I worry about leaching and algae over time. Does anyone here prefer certain containers, or add anything to prevent bacterial growth? I rotate every six months but would love a more hands-off approach. Curious what’s worked (or not worked) for others—any disasters or success stories?

I’ve tried a few different methods over the years and honestly, I keep circling back to food-grade plastic barrels—either the blue 55-gallon ones or smaller 5-gallon jugs. I stay away from anything once used for other chemicals, just to be safe. For bacterial prevention, unscented household bleach
 
Been using glass carboys for years but always in the dark to avoid algae—never tried bleach though. Does it affect the taste much or just a tiny bit?
 
Bleach definitely changes the taste a bit, but if you keep to the recommended amount (1/8 teaspoon per gallon), it’s not overpowering—more of a faint “swimming pool” flavor that fades after airing out. I’ve tried water pres
