Devastating Floods in Arizona Result in Loss of Lives and Hazmat Fears
Tragic news comes from Arizona where severe flooding has claimed the lives of at least four individuals. Two others are currently missing and unaccounted for.
Adding to the severity of this situation, a major safety issue has emerged. The floods have washed away approximately 1,000 propane tanks from a supply center, raising a significant hazmat concern in the center of Globe, Arizona.
State of Emergency Declared
The Governor of Arizona, in response to the crisis, declared a state of emergency. The move is aimed at hastening the deployment of resources to the affected areas. "This flood has brought about a painful loss and serious damage," the Governor admitted in a statement.
Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing to find any additional victims of the flood, as well as the two missing individuals.
Details of the Tragedy
Among the confirmed casualties, two were discovered in a vehicle, drowned. Another victim was found outside a vehicle in downtown Globe. Information regarding the age of the victims or their relationships to one another has yet to be disclosed.
A fourth individual was reported missing during the storm. His body was discovered the next morning outside his car. A full investigation into the cause of death is underway.
Hazardous Situation in Globe
The lost propane tanks pose a significant risk due to their potential to explode. Residents and visitors are being urged to stay away from downtown Globe, which has been deemed unsafe due to compromised structures and the presence of hazardous chemicals and debris, including the missing propane tanks.
"We urge everyone to steer clear of this area until further notice, and also stay away from the creek. Search and rescue operations are ongoing and any traffic in the area can obstruct rescue teams and disrupt the work of trained dogs," read a statement from the city.
Local emergency management is advising residents to stay inside their homes because the floodwaters may contain hazardous materials.
Rescue and Cleanup Efforts
Emergency agencies across the region are working tirelessly to assist with search and rescue operations and hazardous material assessment and cleanup. This includes local fire and police departments, public works, county emergency services, and more.
"Crews have been working round the clock and we want to express our gratitude for their tireless efforts," the city shared.
Additional resources have been called in to aid in the ongoing efforts, including multiple search and rescue teams and work crews from the State Land Department. "We are awaiting the arrival of many more crews from around the state," the city added.
