Best Ways to Purify Water Without Fancy Gear?

If you’re stuck without a filter or chemicals, what’s the most reliable method for purifying water in the field? I know boiling works, but sometimes fuel is scarce. Anyone experimented with DIY solar stills or other low-tech options in a pinch?

Boiling really is the gold standard, but you're right, fuel can be a dealbreaker. I’ve tried solar stills—honestly, they're slow, and you don’t get much water, but they work in a pinch if you’re patient and have plenty of sun. If you’ve got a bit of cloth, gravity filters with sand and charcoal can help clear up water, though you’ll still want to boil

Solar stills will get you something, but it’s barely a cup per day unless you can set up several at once. Tried them a few times out in the yard after a storm knocked out power—enough to keep a pet alive but definitely not enough for all your needs. Sedimentation helps if your water is super murky: just let it sit so the solids settle, then carefully pour off
