Sealing water in food-grade barrels is reliable, in my experience—especially if you fill them with tap water (already treated) and store out of direct sunlight. I do regular checks every six months, just for peace of mind. Never had an issue with funky smells or algae, as long as the lids stay tight and the barrels aren’t disturbed. The only thing I’d add is, avoid milk jugs since the plastic breaks down faster. Has anyone actually tried those stainless steel tanks for this?
