Congressional Visit to Detention Center
On May 9, 2025, a group of Congress members went to the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey. They wanted to see the conditions inside and meet with detainees as part of their ongoing oversight work. The group, which included members from both political parties, toured the building. Delaney Hall holds people in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The group talked with staff about daily operations, how detainees are cared for, and whether the center is following federal rules.
Meeting With Staff and Advocacy Groups
During their visit, lawmakers spoke with facility leaders and ICE officials about the number of people the center can hold, medical care offered, and how detainees get access to lawyers. They also listened to advocacy groups and legal representatives who shared concerns about how detainees are treated and issues related to due process.
Congressional Efforts for Transparency
This visit is part of a larger plan by Congress to make sure immigration detention centers across the United States are transparent and held accountable. The lawmakers stressed the importance of treating people in custody humanely and protecting their rights under the law.
Press Conference After Tour
After finishing the tour, the members of Congress spoke at a press conference outside Delaney Hall. They repeated their promise to keep a close watch on detention facilities. They said they will work with the Department of Homeland Security to fix any problems they find. The group also asked for more ongoing conversations between government agencies, community groups, and families who are affected.
Department of Homeland Security’s Response
The Department of Homeland Security says it will keep working with Congress during oversight visits. It is committed to making sure all detention centers follow federal laws and rules.
