Threats to Machu Picchu's Status as One of the 'New 7 Wonders of the World'

In 2007, the Inca sanctuary, Machu Picchu in Peru, was proudly proclaimed one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. This honor was bestowed upon it after it garnered over 100 million votes in a global contest. However, today, the sanctuary's status as a "wonder" is in jeopardy due to several factors including overpopulation by tourists, inadequate conservation measures, and ongoing social conflicts.

Concerns Over Machu Picchu's Credibility

The group that orchestrated the voting process for the New 7 Wonders of the World has expressed its concern about Machu Picchu's situation. They highlighted that the preservation and responsible management of the site is a collaborative commitment, which should adhere to international preservation and management standards. The group further emphasized that the future of the site lies in the hands of Peru's critical decision-makers, who have been presented with proposals for a strategic transformation plan for the site.

Reactions to the Statement

Upon hearing these concerns, the Ministry of Culture in Peru did not directly respond. However, they later asserted that the United Nations' culture agency, UNESCO, is the only competent authority that can promote the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage. They further clarified that the protection and preservation of Machu Picchu is not under threat and that the site is not included in UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger. They added that during a recent meeting of the World Heritage Committee, UNESCO praised the improvements in visitor management and the implementation of monitoring and conservation tools at the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

In addition, the Peruvian Ministry of Commerce and Tourism planned to organize a meeting with the country's tourism associations to discuss and find a common solution to the intricate situation at Machu Picchu.

Current Situation in Machu Picchu

Recently, a dispute over transportation concessions led to numerous travelers being stranded in and around Machu Picchu. This issue began with demonstrations over the control of the route leading to the sanctuary and escalated when local residents blocked the train tracks leading to the site. Fortunately, a temporary resolution was found when the protesters agreed to a 72-hour suspension of demonstrations, permitting the resumption of transit services.

Is This a Symptom of a Larger Issue?

Are these immediate problems or are they part of a broader, long-standing structural issue? According to the group behind the New 7 Wonders of the World, these challenges have been intensifying over the years and require immediate attention. Some of these problems include the high pressure from tourism, increasing prices for services and goods, the risk of damage to the historical heritage, reports of irregular practices linked to ticket sales, difficulties in land transportation, as well as restrictions in management and conservation policies. Other issues include social conflicts, lack of coordination between institutions and tourism companies, and repeated complaints from visitors.

A few years back, there was a disruption in train services on the route to Machu Picchu because of a strike by a group of residents. They were protesting against the Peruvian government's decision regarding the online sale of tickets to the sanctuary. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges that the site faces, further emphasizing the need for effective management and conservation strategies.
