Start small and steady, that’s the main thing I wish I’d learned sooner. It gets overwhelming fast if you try to prepare for absolutely everything at once – food, water, skills, gear, you name it. I tell folks in my workshops to pick one area (like building up a two-week food supply) and focus on it until it feels solid, then move to the next. Doesn’t all have to happen in a weekend.

One thing that changed everything for me was keeping a simple notebook. I jot down what worked, what didn’t, and what I actually used during real situations (lost power for a week after that big ice storm a few years back). It
