Investigations Initiated into Racial Considerations at Medical Schools

The current administration has sparked investigations into the role of race in admissions processes at three prominent medical schools. This action marks an increased focus on institutions of higher learning, which have been under scrutiny for their perceived liberal leanings.

Details of the Investigation

The Civil Rights division of the Justice Department has initiated reviews into the possibility of discrimination at medical institutions in California, Ohio, and at a renowned university on the west coast. The announcement was made by the department's assistant attorney general for civil rights.

This step is part of a broader effort to increase oversight of universities. The administration has previously focused on undergraduate admissions at selective colleges, insisting on data collection to demonstrate compliance with a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that prohibits affirmative action in college admissions.

Scope of the Inquiry

A letter dispatched to the university in Ohio requested documents pertaining to the "use or lack of use of race" in the assessment of applicants. The department is also seeking comprehensive admissions data and any evaluations undertaken by the school regarding admissions trends or outcomes based on race.

A separate document of five pages outlines the records being sought by the government. This includes information on standardized test scores, data collected or inferred about race and ethnicity, and decisions on admissions for every applicant, starting with the class that entered in 2019.

Schools Respond to the Investigation

The Ohio-based university spokesperson confirmed that the institution is in compliance with state and federal rules and court decisions related to admissions. He added that they have received the letter and will respond accordingly.

The California-based university stated it was reviewing the notice from the Justice Department. The university reaffirmed its commitment to fairness in all its programs and activities, including admissions, in line with both federal and state anti-discrimination laws.

The spokesperson for the medical school on the west coast stated that the school was reviewing the letter. She emphasized the school's policy against unlawful discrimination based on race, color, national or ethnic origin, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Why These Schools?

It remains uncertain why these specific three medical schools were chosen for the investigation.

Affirmative Action and Admissions

The Supreme Court ruling that outlawed the use of affirmative action in admissions did allow for colleges to consider how race has influenced students' lives, if applicants provide this information in their admissions essays. However, concerns have been raised that colleges and universities might be using personal essays and other indirect methods to take race into account, which is viewed as illegal discrimination.
