Major Immigration Operations in Chicago Imminent, Echoing Earlier Actions in Los Angeles
Plans are underway to conduct extensive immigration enforcement operations in Chicago, mirroring similar actions taken earlier in Los Angeles. Two top-ranking officials connected with these operations have confirmed the upcoming expansion of immigration arrest efforts.
The enforcement activities could commence soon, based on information from those familiar with the matter. The approach taken in Los Angeles, which involved the use of armored vehicles, tactical gear, and weaponry, is anticipated to be replicated in Chicago.
National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles
In response to large-scale protests against immigration enforcement in Los Angeles, a National Guard deployment was ordered. Around the same time, Chicago authorities were informed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tactical teams would also be dispatched to their city.
Cristina Pacione-Zayas, Chief of Staff, reported earlier that the city was alerted about the tactical teams being put on a 48-hour notice to prepare for deployment. However, these teams never arrived in the city. It remains unclear whether the upcoming immigration operation is linked to the previously planned enforcement efforts or is an independent operation.
Separate from National Guard Deployment Plans for Chicago
Reports suggest that the planned immigration enforcement is separate from the recent efforts by the president to send the National Guard to Chicago to address city crime. Both Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have vehemently opposed these plans. Governor Pritzker issued a stern warning to the president, cautioning him against coming to Chicago, citing his unwelcomed and unneeded presence.
It was reported that the Department of Homeland Security is in discussions with administrators at Naval Station Great Lakes about providing infrastructural and logistical support for ICE staff working on immigration matters in Chicago. It is not clear whether these talks are a result of the planned escalation in immigration enforcement.
State and City Officials Not Contacted
According to Governor Pritzker, neither he nor anyone in his administration has been contacted by the president's administration about these plans. He expressed concern over the lack of coordination with local law enforcement, characterizing the move as an invasion of the city.
Mayor Johnson, while aware of the reports about the operation, also stated that neither he nor his office had received any direct communication from the federal government.
Department of Homeland Security Statement
The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement, saying, "The president's message has been consistent: our goal is to ensure the safety of our streets and cities. DHS law enforcement officers across the country are arresting and removing dangerous individuals, including gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and rapists who have terrorized American communities. ICE and CBP under Secretary Noem, are working tirelessly to fulfill the mandate of the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens and restore safety in America."
