US Justice Department Reportedly Opens Criminal Probe Into E Jean Carroll Over Perjury Allegations in Trump Lawsuit

Criminal Investigation Initiated into Accuser of Former US President

The Department of Justice (DOJ) in the US has commenced a criminal investigation into E Jean Carroll, an author who had previously accused the former US President of sexual assault.

As per the information gathered, the investigation aims to determine if Carroll was guilty of perjury in relation to the civil lawsuits she lodged against the former President.

Background on Carroll's Accusation

Carroll, who previously worked as a magazine columnist, lodged accusations of sexual assault and defamation against the former President, leading to successful lawsuits in two instances. Both these verdicts were upheld on appeal, however, the former President has requested that the Supreme Court reverse the first decision.

Despite the allegations, the former President has consistently denied them. Efforts to gather comments from the DOJ and Carroll's legal representative have been made.

Past Legal Battles

In one year, a jury determined that the former President was guilty of sexual assault. He was also held accountable for defamation due to remarks he made the year before on a social media platform.

In these comments, he rejected Carroll's assertion that she had been assaulted by him in a New York department store dressing room during the mid-1990s.

A subsequent lawsuit the following year once again found the former President culpable of defamation in relation to remarks he had made about Carroll. In these comments, he accused her of fabricating the allegations against him in an attempt to promote her book.

The former President has petitioned the Supreme Court to reverse the first verdict, for which he was ordered to pay $5 million to Carroll. He has also expressed his intent to do the same with the other case, where Carroll was awarded $83 million.

The Current Investigation

The current criminal case is probing whether Carroll was untruthful in a sworn statement in a previous year when she asserted that she had not received any external funding for her civil lawsuit against the former President.

Legal documents first submitted by the former President's lawyers in a subsequent year revealed that a co-founder of a professional networking site had assisted in covering some of Carroll's legal costs and expenses.

This issue was addressed during the case's appeal, with the court determining that Carroll had "plausibly represented" in her sworn statement "that she had forgotten about the limited outside funding counsel obtained".

The court further stated that "additional discovery... showed that Ms Carroll simply was not involved in the matter of who was or was not funding her litigation costs". This was stated in a ruling by the US Court of Appeals for the Second District.

The current investigation is being spearheaded by the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois. It's important to note that while Carroll's sworn statement was made in New York, one of the individuals who assisted in covering some of Carroll's legal fees has a non-profit organization based in Chicago.
