What’s One Prep You Wish You’d Started Sooner?
Looking back, radio communications is the prep I really wish I’d started years earlier. I underestimated how vital it is to connect with others once the grid goes down or when the cell towers go dark. Picking up a basic handheld ham radio opened a door I didn’t even realize existed—now I’m running a base station, can relay messages across counties, and have built a net with others nearby.
It takes real time investment to learn, get licensed, and actually get comfortable transmitting. There’s a learning curve, especially with antennas and understanding frequencies. I used to focus mostly on food and water preps, but without comms you’re blind to what’s happening beyond your fence.
Curious what others wish they’d prioritized earlier? Was there a skill, piece of gear, or a mindset you wish you’d taken seriously at the start? For folks new to prepping, which area do you feel most drawn to, and which ones do you keep putting off? Making mistakes is inevitable, but maybe we can help each other
