What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Source?

Solar generators seem popular, but I worry about cloudy days. Anyone here rely on something besides solar as their main backup? Curious what folks use for longer outages, especially in areas with unpredictable weather.

Gasoline inverter generator is what I rely on when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Solar’s great until you’re socked in by storms or heavy smoke from wildfires, then it’s pretty much useless. The inverter style is quieter and easier on electronics, but you do have to stay on top of fuel rotation and maintenance. I keep enough treated gas for at least a week, plus a manual siphon and stabilized fuel stored outside the house just in case.

I’ve looked into propane generators too since propane stores longer and is safer, but refilling tanks during emergencies isn’t always practical in my area. If you’re somewhere rural, a bigger buried tank could work. For little things (phones, lights), I use those portable battery banks—hand crank radios too, but wouldn’t want to rely on those for anything major.

Honestly, redundancy feels like

Redundancy really is the name of the game, especially if you’re dealing with unpredictable weather. I’ve had decent luck with a small dual-fuel generator—runs on propane or gasoline, which gives a bit more flexibility if one fuel’s hard to get. Propane does store forever compared to gas. For essentials, I also keep a stash of battery-powered lights and a few USB battery packs ready to go. Anyone here actually tried running anything large (like a fridge) off a propane generator during a week-long outage?

Running a fridge on a propane generator during a long outage actually worked decent for me last fall—we had five days with no grid power after a storm. The propane held up, and I just cycled the fridge on and off every few hours to save fuel. Agree about battery banks for small stuff, but honestly, managing fuel and noise gets old fast. Has anyone found a quieter option that’s still reliable for running basics?
