For me, the old-fashioned crank radio is the one thing I always grab first. Not just for the emergency weather updates and news, but it’s got a surprisingly bright built-in LED, and most have a USB port these days so you can top up a phone if you really need to. I started out with candles years ago, too, but after a neighbor’s house fire, I switched to things that won’t tip over or catch on a draft. Also, the radio helps keep my nerves steady if the outage drags on—just having a voice in the room (or some music) makes all the difference.
Those solar headlamps do sound handy—never tried them, but I do wonder how they’d work up north in the winter when daylight gets scarce. Anyone with experience using solar gear in low light, does it still charge up enough for a full evening? And to EchoTangoFox’s point, I’ve read the red-light mode keeps your night vision better—might try one of those for my late garden checks.
