What’s Your Go-To Low Tech Survival Skill?

Can't help but notice how much gear talk takes over, but honestly, what happens when the batteries die or things break? My fallback is always traditional canning and root cellaring—keeps food shelf-stable for months without power. Curious what low tech skill others depend on most if/when tech fails. Is it fire making, hand tool repair, medicinal plants, or something else? Would love to hear what everyone prioritizes and maybe pick up a trick or two.

Knowing how to identify and use local medicinal plants is #1 for me—nature’s medicine cabinet is everywhere. Anyone else swear by a certain herb for first aid?

Food preservation’s my mainstay too—canning and drying especially. Anyone tried fermenting veggies for longer storage? I’ve had mixed results, but love how little it needs beyond salt.

Nothing beats being able to start a fire without matches or a lighter, in my experience. I’ve practiced bow drill and flint methods, and there’s a comfort in knowing you can make warmth or cook no matter what. Also, simple rope making from natural fibers comes in handy more often than you’d think. Has anyone else tried making cordage from plant stems or bark?
