What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item and Why?

Bet most folks forget about extra eyeglasses or reading glasses in their kits. If something happens to mine, I’m in real trouble. What’s the one thing you always make sure to pack that others might overlook?

Can’t believe how many folks forget about books or something to read—maybe it’s just the librarian in me, but a bit of mental distraction keeps you sane when you’re stuck waiting out storms. I always tuck a small paperback or a deck of cards in with my gear. Also, gardening gloves double as great all-purpose protectors if you’re clearing debris. Anyone else keep little comfort items around, or is it all tools and tech for you?

Comfort absolutely matters! When you’re already stressed, a little bit of “normal” can make all the difference. I always stash a small bottle of lavender essential oil in my kit—sounds silly, but a quick sniff calms nerves, helps kids sleep, and even masks less-than-fresh shelter smells. It’s one of those tiny luxuries that feels huge in a crisis.

Another thing I think gets missed: chapstick. Seems minor, until you’re outside in the wind for hours and your lips are cracked. I toss in a few extras, plus some hard candy. Sucking on something sugary helps distract little ones and even keeps dry mouths at bay if water's limited.

I love the idea of cards or books—keeps minds busy and spirits up. Anyone else stock up on comfort things specifically for kids? Grandkids always raid my stash for coloring pencils and paper, but maybe I’m the only one packing mini art supplies in with the first aid kit!
