Scanning through my gear the other day, I realized I always reach for the obvious items—water filter, knives, first aid kit—but rarely consider the smaller, easily forgotten things. For instance, I think a lot of folks overlook heavy-duty needle and thread (not talking about the standard sewing kit), but something robust enough to repair gear, clothing, tarps, or even shoes in the field. I came across an old awl in my workshop and tossed it in my kit, figuring it might be more useful than I thought.
