What’s Your Top “Must Have” Prep for Blackouts?

If you could only pick one item to get you through an extended power outage, what would it be? For me, it’s got to be a reliable lantern—modern or oil. Curious how others here prioritize between light, heat, or maybe even comms during blackout scenarios.

A lantern is a good pick—hard to beat reliable light when everything else goes dark. Personally, though, I'd have to go with a well-stocked first aid kit. Maybe it’s the nurse in me, but accidents seem to happen in the dark, and hospitals can be swamped or unreachable. If I could sneak in a close second, I’d say a hand-crank radio for info. Curious if anyone has actually used an oil lantern in a prolonged outage lately—does the smell or maintenance ever get old?
