What’s Your Top Prep for Power Grid Failures?

Curious what everyone’s go-to is for long-term power grid failure. Do you prioritize solar, generators, battery banks, or something else entirely? Always looking for smarter ways to stretch stored energy and keep essentials running without drawing too much attention.

I lean pretty hard on solar for the long haul, especially for keeping lights, comms, and my fridge/freezer going (at least a few hours a day to preserve food/meds). Panels paired with a decent battery bank are basically silent, which matters a lot if you don’t want to advertise you’ve got power. Gas generators are handy for short term, but fuel storage and noise are real downsides, not to mention eventually you just run out unless you’ve got a serious stockpile or biofuel setup. I’ve also made it a point to reduce what actually *needs* power—swapped out appliances for manual versions, set up solar lanterns, even got into canning to cut down freezer dependence.

One thing I keep meaning to try is a small wind turbine

Solar and battery banks have been my main focus too—quiet, don’t need fuel, and you can add to the setup over time. I’ve tried to trim energy needs way down by switching to manual kitchen tools, oil lamps, and only running the fridge a couple hours a day if needed. Generator’s mostly a backup for me now, because storing that much fuel is tricky and honestly makes me nervous. Has anyone actually tested one of those portable wind turbines? Curious if they’re worth the investment for supplementing solar on cloudy stretches
