What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Every time I inventory my gear, I realize how easy it is to forget simple things like extra shoelaces or a sturdy needle and thread. What small essentials do you find yourself accidentally leaving out, even after all these years of prepping?

Almost always forget spare eyeglasses, even though I remind myself every year. If you wear 'em, having a backup pair tucked away could make all the difference—can't patch a tent or read a map if you can't see! Another one for me is a good old-fashioned hand-crank can opener. Electric ones are useless off-grid and those tiny multi-tool openers are fiddly at best, especially with stiff fingers in the cold. Keep meaning to add a small file too

Spare shoelaces are easy to overlook, but they're a little thing that can save a lot of trouble—especially if you hike or garden as much as I do. I’d add that people forget pencil and paper, too. Phones die, but jotting notes, leaving messages, or just making a list becomes tricky without them. Hand-crank can opener is a classic, but I still swear by a sturdy manual one with a comfy grip for arthritic hands. It’s funny how the smallest, simplest items become absolutely vital when things get tough.
