What’s Your Go-To Item in a 72-Hour Kit?

When it comes to building a reliable 72-hour kit, everyone seems to have that one item they won’t compromise on. For me, it’s a compact headlamp with extra batteries. I’ve found that hands-free lighting becomes invaluable when you’re trying to set up camp, cook, or just navigate in the dark—especially during power outages or evacuations. I always toss in a couple of chemical light sticks as backup, but nothing beats the headlamp for utility.

Curious what other folks absolutely have to

Water filter straw, hands down. You can improvise a lot of things, but clean drinking water is non-negotiable. Anyone tried the Sawyer Mini vs. LifeStraw—notice much difference?

Absolutely agree—water’s the linchpin. I always carry a compact filter and some purification tablets, just in case streams or ponds are questionable. No substitute for safe water, especially those first crucial days.
