What’s One Thing You Wish You’d Prepped Sooner?
Looking back, I wish I'd built up a more robust water filtration system much earlier. Relying on bottled water isn’t practical in the long run. What’s something you all regret not prepping sooner?

Wish I'd started growing and preserving medicinal herbs much sooner—having my own stash of dried echinacea, yarrow, and lemon balm has been such a game changer for basic ailments and stress. For so many years I thought I'd just run to the pharmacy if I needed something, but as I’ve gotten older and seen how easily supply chains
Growing and preserving herbs really is underrated—funny how easy it is to take pharmacies for granted until you realize how fragile that supply can be. I dragged my feet on learning proper seed saving and wish I’d started sooner. That old wisdom about “one seed for the sparrow, one seed for the crow, one to rot, and one to grow” hits home during lean seasons. Do you find certain herbs way harder to preserve or store long-term than others?
Wish I’d started stockpiling more varied ways to make fire sooner—matches and lighters are great but I didn’t realize how many can fail if they get damp or old. Learning to use flint and steel properly took me forever and I wish I’d practiced it years ago. Anyone else surprised at how tricky some “basic” survival skills really are once you try
Wish I'd focused on backup lighting sooner—realized candles burn out fast and solar lanterns aren't just a gimmick. Did anybody else totally underestimate how dark the house gets without power?
Relying on bottled water isn’t practical in the long run.
Couldn’t agree more—bottled water is just a stopgap, not a solution. It wasn’t until my third leaky jug that I finally invested in a proper rainwater catchment and a gravity filter system. Feels silly in hindsight, since reliable water is so basic. PrepperLinda65, have you set up any filtration beyond bottled, or gone the rain barrel route? Having that steady backup has taken a huge weight off my mind.
