Best Backup Water Sources When the Tap Runs Dry?

When municipal water fails, what’s everyone using as their primary backup? I keep a few rain barrels, but I’m concerned about runoff contamination and long-term storage issues. Anyone have experience purifying pond or creek water effectively—especially during dry spells when the flow gets sluggish? Would appreciate some ideas on unconventional sources or overlooked filtration setups that don’t break the bank. Seems like reliable backup water is getting tricky
