Australian Lawmaker in Critical Condition After Vehicle Attack
Helen Haines, an independent member of Australia’s federal parliament, is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta. She had emergency surgery. One of her legs suffered severe injuries, and doctors were working to save the other.
Police have charged Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old resident of nearby Tarrawingee, in connection with the attack. He is a voter in the district Haines represents, in northeastern Victoria. Nugent is in custody while investigators look into what led to the incident.
Police Investigate What Led to the Attack
Investigators are examining whether the attack was politically motivated. The case involves federal and state police, a joint counterterrorism team, and Australia’s domestic security agency.
Nugent was reportedly too impaired by drugs or alcohol to be questioned after the incident. A bystander who helped at the scene described him as acting erratically after he was removed from his white Toyota Land Cruiser. The bystander said Nugent appeared concerned about the vehicle’s passenger door, his phone, and his wallet.
Nugent has described himself online as an environmental activist. His posts have focused on environmental issues, especially the logging of native forests. He has also expressed anti-Israel views and criticized Australia’s military partnership with the United States and the AUKUS agreement.
He has often replied to politicians online, including Haines. His posts have sometimes been forceful and rude. A review of nearly 11,000 posts made over several years found no clear calls for violence.
Environmental Work and Local Concerns
A forestry document prepared by Nugent describes him as having a master’s degree in forest ecosystem science from the University of Melbourne’s Creswick campus, which is part of the Victorian School of Forestry. The document also lists him as a committee member of a group that works to protect the Strathbogie Forest.
Police had visited Nugent’s property several months before the attack after neighbors raised concerns about behavior they considered erratic. They reportedly said he had changed greatly and that they worried about his mental health.
Leaders Warn Against Political Violence
Politicians from different parties have spoken about the risks of growing division and intolerance. They warned that hostility in public life can contribute to violence and harm democracy.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said security agencies guide decisions about protection. He also stressed that people should still be able to meet and speak with their elected representatives, calling that an important part of democracy.
Australia’s domestic security chief said investigators were working to establish the motive. The national terrorism threat level remains at “probable,” while the overall security climate is a concern. The chief said rising anger, intolerance, and political division can create conditions in which violence becomes more likely.
The security chief also warned that harsh public language can inflame tensions. Political debate and peaceful protest are essential, the statement said, but violence and intimidation are unacceptable, especially when aimed at elected officials.
Community Members Came to Haines’s Aid
Albanese said he had thanked Ricky Jefferies, a local barber who pulled Nugent from the vehicle and went to help Haines. Jefferies’s shop is close to Haines’s office. The prime minister described his actions as an example of people showing courage and kindness during a terrible event.
Nugent’s father, Rod, and his father’s partner, Christine Cunningham, said Haines had been their friend for more than 20 years. They described the attack as devastating and said she is deeply valued and loved in the local community. They sent their support to Haines and her family and friends, thanked the people who helped, and said they would assist police.
Charges Filed
Police charged Nugent with three offenses:
- Dangerous driving causing serious injury
- Intentionally causing serious injury
- Causing harm to a Commonwealth public official
He is due to appear in Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court. The investigation into the attack and its motive is continuing.
