How Long Would Your Supplies Really Last?

Ever actually sat down and calculated how many days your pantry would hold out if the grid went down—no supply runs, no top offs? I did a spreadsheet audit and was a little surprised (not in a good way) at how fast “plenty” started looking like “barely enough.” Do you folks rely on calorie count, meal plans, or just a gut feeling? Curious how others really check their numbers, especially for long-term scenarios. Any overlooked pitfalls or tips to share?

Spreadsheets made me rethink my stash too, honestly. When I finally sat down and inventoried every can and bag, it was eye-opening how easily you can overestimate. I started using calorie counts per person per day—2,000 as my target but figured in lower activity levels too, since we wouldn’t

Kept track by tallying up each item in the pantry—turned out some things ran out way before others. Surprised how fast coffee and salt dwindled compared to rice or beans. I do a basic calorie count but also try to build actual meal combos so I don’t get stuck with odd leftovers. Anyone else notice how easy it is to forget about seasoning and comfort foods until they’re missing?
