Gravity filters have been a workhorse for me, especially when it comes to long-term off-grid setups. The big Berkey is a classic, but I've seen good results from Sawyer and MSR gravity bags too—solid flow rate and no need for squeezing or pumping, just let gravity do the job. Filters like those will handle bacteria and protozoa, though if you're worried about viruses, a secondary step (UV pen or chemical) is smart.
Boiling's reliable, but like you said, it's not ideal if you're counting every stick of fuel. Plus, waiting for water to cool down in summer can be a pain. Iodine and chlorine tablets are fine for backup, but the taste gets old fast. I’ll sometimes use activated carbon in-line if the water’s funky-tasting, and that helps a lot.
