Duo from Pennsylvania Detained Following a Blast Near New York City Mayor's Home

Two young men from Pennsylvania were taken into custody following the ignition of explosive devices near the residence of the New York City Mayor. The scene of the incident was visited by a large number of law enforcement officials on the day following the incident.

After the explosives were set off, authorities initiated an investigation into potential terrorist activity. The two suspects, an 18-year old and a 19-year old, both hail from Pennsylvania. They were taken into custody subsequent to the incident but have not yet been formally charged. Both are students; one is currently enrolled in a local school district, and the other is set to graduate high school in 2024, as confirmed by school officials.

The Incident and Related Protests

The incident took place on a Saturday, amid an anti-Islam protest near the official residence of the New York City mayor, commenced by individuals associated with a far-right influencer and a previously pardoned participant of a January 6 riot. Concurrently, a group of over 100 people gathered at the same location to stage a counter-protest titled "Run the Nazis Out of New York City/Stand Against Hate."

Witnesses reported seeing one of the suspects light and throw a device towards the protesters, which emitted flames and smoke as it flew through the air before hitting a barrier and extinguishing itself, mere feet away from police officers. Video footage shows a man shouting "Allahu Akbar", translating to "God is Most Great", just as the device was launched, though it remains unclear who was behind the shout.

It was reported that the same suspect then ran to collect a second device from his accomplice, lit it, and ran with it before dropping it on a city avenue.

The Nature of the Explosive Devices

It was clarified by authorities that one of the devices was indeed an improvised explosive device (IED) that could have caused severe injury or even death, rather than a hoax device or a smoke bomb. The details surrounding the suspicious device have led to the initiation of a federal terrorism investigation.

The devices were described as being slightly smaller than a football, appearing to be jars covered in tape, filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, and equipped with a hobby fuse.

Law Enforcement Activity in Pennsylvania

The suspects' hometown in Pennsylvania saw a significant police presence on the day following the incident. Officers in tactical gear were seen with their weapons ready in the vicinity of the address of one of the suspects, who is a student in the local school district.

Residents were asked to exit the home after the announcement, "This is the FBI, everybody come out," was made via megaphone. Local police units were seen assisting the FBI in their investigation.

Meanwhile, another suspicious device was discovered inside a vehicle on a city avenue, approximately three blocks south of the park where the mayor's residence is located, which led to the evacuation of surrounding buildings while the Bomb Squad assessed and removed the device. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation.

Philadelphia Resident Charged Following Clashes at Protest

Amidst the aforementioned events, a 21-year old man from Philadelphia was also charged with assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of a noxious material (pepper spray) after protesters clashed outside the mayor's residence. He was allegedly filmed using pepper spray on counter-protesters. In addition, three other individuals were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction charges.
