Actress Discloses Battle with Breast Cancer
In a revealing personal essay, a well-known actress shared her journey of being diagnosed with breast cancer. This shocking news came at a time when both her parents were in hospice care in different parts of the country.
The actress, known for her role in a popular romantic comedy, was accustomed to biannual visits to a breast surgeon. However, one of these routine checks before a holiday turned out to be anything but ordinary.
She recalled the silence of her usually chatty doctor as she was examined. The doctor's concern over something on the ultrasound led to an immediate biopsy. The doctor's urgency in personally delivering the sample to the pathology lab tipped off the actress that something was amiss.
Following the biopsy, a small tumor was discovered, necessitating further testing. The actress was then informed about the concept of receptor status, which essentially determines the severity of the cancer. The doctor explained it like a spectrum of dog breeds, with one end being poodles and the other being pit bulls.
Waiting for the Results
As the actress anxiously awaited her results with her husband, the co-creator of a famous fantasy drama series, she turned to anxiety medication to cope. However, her anxiety was so high that the medication didn't seem to have an effect. Then, she received a text from her doctor: "All poodle features!" This meant that her cancer was hormone-receptor-positive and 'HER2-negative', both of which are more favorable in terms of treatment.
She described her initial euphoria at the news, only to be reminded that she still had to undergo an MRI and potentially face more uncertainty. She reflected on the slow, terrifying process of a cancer diagnosis.
Although the MRI showed no spread to the lymph nodes, it revealed a second mass in the same breast. This discovery led to a delay in her planned lumpectomy and the need for another biopsy.
The Biopsy and Beyond
The actress chronicled the grueling biopsy procedure, which involved a complex device used to pinpoint the location of the new mass. She compared the process to a twisted game of Battleship, as the doctor and technician called out coordinates to identify the exact area to target. The less-than-promising odds of the mass being benign left her with a renewed fear of more cancer.
Fortunately, the mass was benign, which meant her treatment plan would involve a lumpectomy and radiation instead of a more drastic double mastectomy or chemotherapy. The actress revealed that her cancer was at Stage I.
While she found radiation to be manageable compared to the biopsy, she did note the discomfort of her skin becoming blistered towards the end of the treatment.
Reflecting on a Difficult Journey
In the final part of her essay, the actress shared that she had a clear scan at the start of the year. Shortly after, she began planning her mother's funeral following her father's death the previous year. She spent her mother's last days with her, cherishing the quiet moments they had together.
She wasn't sure if her mother could recognize her in those final days, but she chose to communicate without words, believing that time was slipping away and that everything that needed to be said had been said.
