Heatwave Shatters Records in Australia as Mercury Soars Near 50 Degrees Celsius
Australia is grappling with an intense heatwave, as temperatures in certain regions are hitting nearly 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). This surge in heat is breaking previous records and causing widespread discomfort among residents and tourists alike.
Scorching Temperatures in Rural Towns
In the rural areas of Hopetoun and Walpeup, located in the state of Victoria, initial temperature readings were as high as 48.9 C (120 F). These figures, if verified, would surpass the existing record temperatures from 2009. During that year, the infamous Black Saturday bushfires claimed the lives of 173 people. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported so far during the current heatwave. However, state officials in Victoria have issued warnings, as three forest fires continue to blaze uncontrollably.
City Life Under the Heatwave
Victoria's largest city, Melbourne, is also feeling the heat, inching close to its highest-ever temperature record. The impact of the sweltering heat was particularly noticeable at Melbourne Park, the usual site of the Australian Open tennis tournament. The once bustling venue was nearly deserted, with the relentless heat keeping spectators away.
Measures Taken at Australian Open
The heatwave has forced the Australian Open organizers to implement extreme heat policies. This includes closing the retractable roofs over the main arenas and delaying games scheduled on the open outer courts. During the last match played under the punishing sun, between Aryna Sabalenka and Iva Jovic, players were seen using ice packs and portable fans to cool down during breaks in the game.
Photographers covering the match received cushions from the organizers to prevent injuries due to the heat. They also covered their cameras with towels to protect them from overheating and causing burns. Spectators who braved the heat queued to stand in front of large misting fans or sought refuge in the venue's air-conditioned areas.
Dipping Attendance at the Event
Due to the extreme heat, the event saw a significant drop in attendance. The number of spectators fell from 50,000 on Monday to just 21,000 on Tuesday, as people heeded the health warnings issued by officials and chose to stay home.
Weather Forecast
Although a slight dip in temperatures is expected on Wednesday, the heatwave is predicted to persist until the weekend. This heatwave comes on the heels of another earlier this month, making this one of the hottest summers ever experienced in Australia.
Other Regions Experiencing Record Heat
The heatwave is not just limited to Victoria. Parts of New South Wales and South Australia also hit record temperatures recently, surpassing the records set during the summer of 2019, which was marked by destructive forest fires.
