Emergency State Declared as Flash Floods Intensify, Death Count Rises
The governor has officially declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather conditions and flash floods that have been greatly affecting a large part of the region.
Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Flooding
Heavy rainfall has been reported across the region, with some locations receiving over seven inches of rain before the weather system moved out of the area over the weekend. The governor described the situation as a grave flooding event, with teams having to conduct several water rescues from properties and vehicles throughout the region. He urged citizens to stay alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue and to refrain from driving, especially after dark when visibility is limited.
Flooding Claims Lives
According to the governor, at least one driver was killed after being swept off the road by the flash floods. He later shared an update stating that three individuals lost their lives in Madison County, and another in Jackson County. The local police reported that two of the deaths in Madison County were suspected drownings, as a man and a woman were discovered inside a flooded residence. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.
Given the hazardous road conditions and poor visibility, the governor strongly advised people to avoid the roads after dark unless it is absolutely critical.
Counties Declare State of Emergency
Five counties have declared states of emergency due to the severe weather conditions:
Emergency Response and Resource Management
The governor reported that emergency management, state police, and water rescue teams have been responding to emergency calls across the state throughout the day. As the number of emergency calls increased, the governor requested residents to use the emergency number 911 only for situations that are life-threatening.
Those requiring help with non-life-threatening issues were encouraged to contact the State Warning Point at 1-800-255-2587.
Price Gouging Laws Enforced
With the declaration of a state of emergency, the region's laws against price gouging have been put into action. This allows the Office of the Attorney General to investigate any reports of excessive price hikes on goods and services during the state of emergency.
