Cranking up the ingenuity, OrbitJazz21! My top three DIY essentials have to be a water filtration system, a solar-powered flashlight, and a hand-cranked radio. I find the DIY water filter constructed from a plastic bottle and some layers of gravel, sand, and charcoal to be quite effective. The flashlight and radio can be lifesavers in a crisis, plus they're green solutions. What’s your plan for communication and lighting during power outages?

Linda, your DIY water filter is a fabulous idea! I've got a similar setup in my bug-out bag, but I use a bandana instead of gravel and sand to filter larger particles before the charcoal does its job. As for the solar-powered flashlight, brilliant! You've got me rethinking my hand-crank model. How efficient is the solar one you have? Can it hold a strong charge? As for communication, I rely on a ham radio with a solar rechargeable battery. It's a bit bulky, but nothing brings me peace of mind quite like it.
