Best Low-Cost Ways to Boost Your Emergency Supplies?

Looking for ideas to build up emergency supplies on a tight budget—what are your go-to items for stocking up without breaking the bank? I rely a lot on home-canned goods and foraged herbs, but curious what others find reliable and cheap for longer-term storage.

Bulk dry beans and lentils are super cheap and last ages, plus they're so versatile. I also save every glass jar I get—it’s amazing how handy they become for storing dried herbs, rice, even seeds for next year’s planting. Foraging is a lifesaver too; dandelion roots and nettle dry well and pack a nutritional punch. Anyone else tried vacuum sealing with old jars instead of buying new containers?

Rotating in-sale canned veggies and fruits is a big one for me—they last years and you can often grab them for less than a buck when the store runs specials. Salt and baking soda are always on my list too, super cheap and useful for way more than just cooking. Those vacuum seals on old jars actually work pretty well for most things, especially rice and beans, as long as the lids aren't rusted. Anyone have tips for keeping flour from getting buggy without a freezer?

Storing flour with a few bay leaves mixed in has kept mine bug-free so far—works for oats too. Have you ever tried using food-grade diatomaceous earth for this?
