Best Ways to Store Water for Long-Term Emergencies

Looking into storing water for 6+ months—are food-grade barrels still the consensus, or has anyone had good luck with alternative containers? Also wondering about best additives for keeping things potable long-term. Appreciate any firsthand experiences, especially in humid climates.

Food-grade barrels have worked best for me—just make sure they're opaque and tightly sealed. Ever tried adding a splash of bleach? Curious if it affects taste long-term in humidity.

Food-grade barrels work great, just swap the water every six months. I use plain unscented bleach—taste is fine if you don’t overdo it. Anyone tried pool shock instead?

Opaque food-grade barrels have been solid for me, too, especially with a bit of unscented bleach. I’ve noticed if you keep the lid tightly on and store them in shade, humidity doesn’t seem to get in. Never tried pool shock—does it alter the taste or leave a smell after a while? I always worry about anything that might make the water unpalatable.
