I’ve had good luck with food-grade blue barrels—they’re tough, don’t let in much light, and fit well in garages or basements. IBC totes are tempting for sheer volume, but I’m always a bit wary unless I know their history (some previously held chemicals, which is a no-go for me). For rotation, I write the fill date on masking tape and aim for a full drain and refill every six months. As for algae, limiting sunlight exposure is huge, so I keep my barrels covered or indoors. Food-grade barrels have worked well for me too, especially the blue ones—they keep light out and seem pretty sturdy. IBC totes are great if you need a ton of water, but I only trust them if I know exactly what was inside before. For keeping algae at bay, I toss in a couple of drops of unscented household bleach per gallon, and store everything in the shade.
