Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term at Home?
With all the recent talk about water insecurity, I’m reviewing my own setup for storing water at home long-term. Right now, I rely on a mix of 55-gallon food-grade barrels in the basement and several 5-gallon jugs, but I'm starting to worry about sanitation and whether my rotation schedule is strict enough. I add a bit of unscented bleach according to CDC guidelines, and I rotate every 6 months, but is that really the best method for storage beyond a year?
Also, I’ve heard some folks using stackable water bricks and even considering rainwater collection for backup—does anyone have first-hand experience with these? What are the pros and cons, especially when it comes to filtering and treating water before drinking? Lastly, I’d appreciate any advice on minimizing plastic leaching for longer-term solutions. Glass isn’t practical for big storage, but there must be a safer alternative than standard blue barrels.
Curious what the community’s trusted methods and protocols are, especially from those who've lived off stored water for extended periods. Do you recommend anything outside the usual bleach
