Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term—What Actually Works?

Been doing some digging on water storage solutions and there’s a lot of conflicting info out there. Is it really necessary to treat tap water with bleach if it’s already chlorinated, or are the food-grade barrels enough by themselves? I’m also curious about the practical shelf life people are actually seeing in their setups—are you rotating every six months, or can it go longer without funky smells or algae?

Tap water straight from the tap into food-grade barrels has worked fine for me without adding bleach, as long as the barrels are spotless to start. I typically rotate mine once a year, and never had a bad smell or taste. Biggest issue is keeping them away from sunlight—algae loves a sunny corner. Have you noticed any weird flavors with longer storage, or are you mostly worried about bacteria?

Clean barrels and shaded storage make all the difference; I skip bleach too. Anyone tried storing water for over two years—did you notice any changes?
