Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term—What Works?

Been thinking a lot about water storage lately, especially with all the unpredictable weather lately. Right now I’ve got a mix of food-grade barrels and some leftover 1-gallon jugs, but I keep running into mixed opinions on the best way to treat and store water for the long haul. Some folks swear by adding unscented bleach, others push for water purification tabs, and then there’s those who just say rotate it every 6 months and call it good.

What actually works for, say, a 2-year period or even longer? Has anyone had issues with taste or leaching from containers over time? I’m curious too about storage in less-than-ideal places like a hot garage—does that make a huge difference? Also, any recommendations for keeping the water from getting that “flat” taste would be much appreciated.

I do have a decent herbal knowledge base and wonder if there are any natural methods for keeping stored water fresh (other than boiling, obviously). Would love to hear what systems or tricks are actually working for folks in

Food-grade barrels have definitely worked best for me over the long run. The 1-gallon jugs are convenient but I’ve found they can get brittle or leaky after a year or two, even if they’re BPA-free. For treating, I stick with good old plain bleach—about 1/8th teaspoon per gallon if you’re using the unscented stuff. I’ve kept water for 18 months this way with no bad taste, though I do rotate if I remember!

Taste can get kind of flat, especially
