Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term Without Chemicals?

Looking for the most reliable ways to store water long-term without using chemicals like bleach or AquaTabs. I've got a mix of food-grade barrels and glass jugs, but I'm concerned about bacteria and algae growth over several months. Is rotating the water every six months enough, or has anyone had luck with natural methods like solar pasteurization or using silver? Would love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for others who avoid chemical treatments.

Rotating every 6 months works for me, as long as containers are super clean and kept in the dark. Has anyone tried using silver coins—did it actually make a difference?

Clean barrels, stored cool and dark, and rotating every 4–6 months has been solid for me. Silver coins seem promising, but has anyone actually tested bacteria levels after months?

Rotating water every 4–6 months is honestly the safest bet if you want to avoid chemicals, especially when you’ve cleaned your barrels thoroughly and keep things cool and out of the light. I’ve experimented with adding pure silver coins to my glass jugs—there’s a lot of old wisdom behind silver’s antimicrobial properties—but I never did any scientific bacteria tests, just went by smell, clarity, and a little taste. Never had water go bad that way, but it may not be foolproof if you need absolute certainty.

Solar pasteurization is solid for small batches, like if you’re out camping or off-grid, but for bigger volumes it’s a headache to process and re-store everything. That said, I line my containers with a bit of air space at the top and make sure nothing organic gets in, especially after the initial fill. Algae is more of a

Silver does seem to help, but without an actual bacteria test it’s hard to know for sure. I’ve put pre-1965 silver dimes in glass jugs and kept them in a dark space for about 8 months—water stayed clear and smelled fine, never noticed anything off. Rotating every 6 months is still my main strategy, though. Anyone tried taking a water sample to a lab after storing with silver, just to put the old advice to the test?
