Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term?

Storing water for the long haul keeps nagging at the back of my mind, especially these days. I know there are tons of methods, but I’m still hunting for the most reliable one that won’t leave me with stale or possibly contaminated water a year down the line. I’ve used 55-gallon food-grade barrels before, but I’ve seen a lot of debate about adding bleach, using water preserver drops, or just rotating every six months.

Does anyone have long-term experience with storing water for a year or more *without* changing it out constantly? I’m interested in methods that balance practicality with safety—containers, additives, storage location specifics, etc. There’s also the question of glass vs. plastic, and whether it’s better to keep some in smaller jugs for mobility’s sake.

If you’ve done taste tests after a year or longer, or have pointers on what actually works (or failed miserably), I’d love some real-world feedback. Also, thoughts on natural water purification (

I’ve kept water in 5-gallon food-grade containers for almost two years without rotating, just added plain, unscented bleach (about 1/8 tsp per gallon). Kept them in a dark, cool corner of the basement—no sunlight at all. Taste was fine, not “fresh from the tap” but no weird flavors either. I do think plastic is more practical than glass for larger amounts, especially if you might have to move them. Has anyone noticed any odd odors from certain container brands?

There’s also the question of glass vs.

Glass is great for purity, but I worry about breakage and weight if you’ve got to move supplies—does anyone here actually use glass for long-term, or just smaller emergency batches?
