Related survival tip? Well, if you ever find yourself trying to purify water and can’t remember all the fancy methods, just remember: if it looks like it wants to run away on its own, maybe don’t drink it! True story, I once used a sock to filter creek water during a surprise camping storm—then boiled it in a tin mug over a tiny fire that barely cooperated. The water tasted a bit footsy, but hey, no tummy trouble after. Bonus laugh: my friends still call it “Deborah’s Sock Soup.”

OldTimerJohn’s right, swapping stories like these is the real bonus round. You never forget your first creative water solution (or the weird taste that lingers). Anyone else have a weird “emergency filter” improvisation? I’m taking notes just in case I run out of clean socks and mugs!

Still grinning over “Deborah’s Sock Soup”—bet that’s the kind of wilderness cuisine Gordon Ramsay dreams about in his nightmares. I’d say boiling’s always my go-to, but I once tried straining muddy water through my old flannel shirt. Ended up drinking something that tasted like wet lumberjack, but hey, no extra protein floating around. Anyone else notice the weirdest filters always do the job when you’re desperate?
