Canada no longer measles-free as outbreaks spread

Measles Returns to Canada Amidst Ongoing Outbreaks

Health experts from around the globe have confirmed that Canada has lost its measles-free status due to rising outbreaks. This is largely attributed to a decline in childhood vaccination rates, which has allowed the highly infectious virus to spread across North and South America.

The declaration that Canada is no longer measles-free occurs over a year after the highly infectious virus began to increase in prevalence. In the current year alone, Canada has recorded 5,138 measles cases in addition to two deaths, both being infants who contracted the measles virus in utero and were born prematurely.

The Significance of Measles Elimination

The term "measles elimination" carries symbolic significance, representing a critical victory over the infectious disease. It is a status that a country earns when it successfully halts the continuous transmission of the virus within local communities. However, sporadic cases may still occur due to travel.

Measles is a serious condition that typically starts with a high fever, followed by a distinctive rash that appears on the face and neck. While most individuals recover, measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children, as stated by the World Health Organization. Severe complications like blindness and brain swelling are more common in young children and adults aged 30 and above. Fortunately, a vaccine that is routinely and safely administered to children worldwide can prevent the disease.

The Impact of Canada's Status Loss

The news of Canada losing its measles-free status has been met with disappointment and concern by health experts. It is viewed as a major setback especially for a country with resources like Canada. One infectious disease expert from Brown University expressed that it is deeply disheartening and frankly, embarrassing.

Canada first achieved measles elimination in 1998, with the United States following suit two years later. Thanks to highly successful vaccination campaigns, the Americas became the first region to be declared measles-free in 2016. It is estimated that the measles vaccine has saved 6.2 million lives in the Americas between 2000 and 2023.

The Challenge of Maintaining Vaccination Rates

However, maintaining vaccination coverage rates above the required 95% threshold to prevent outbreaks has proved challenging. Large outbreaks in Venezuela and Brazil in 2018 and 2019 cost the region its measles-free status. Although this status was regained in 2024, it was once again lost due to the ongoing situation in Canada.

Experts from an independent health organization analyzed data on Canada's outbreaks and concluded that the virus has been continuously spreading for a year. The director of the health organization stated in a briefing that eliminating measles from local communities has never been an easy task. But, he also expressed optimism, stating, "As a region, we have eliminated measles twice, we can do it a third time."

Reacting to this development, Canadian health officials have stated that they are collaborating with government and community partners to improve vaccination coverage, share data, and provide evidence-based guidance. Thus, the fight against measles continues, underscoring the importance of sustained vaccination efforts.
