China's NEV Retail Sales Decline for Sixth Consecutive Month Despite Record Exports

New Energy Vehicles in China Witness a Dip in Retail Sales Amidst a Surge in Exports

As per recent data, there has been a steady decline in the retail sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China, marking the sixth month in a row. However, a simultaneous jump in exports has been a silver lining for the industry.

June saw NEV retail sales at 1.007 million units, a decrease of 9.4% compared to the same month the previous year, but a 6.0% rise from May. Notably, this is the first time this year that monthly sales crossed the 1 million threshold.

NEV Market Continues to Dominate Amidst Pressure

Despite the dip in sales, the NEV market continues to show strength. The penetration rate of NEVs in retail sales remained high at 62.8% in June, a rise of 9.5 percentage points from the previous year and just a slight decrease from May's historical high.

Overall passenger vehicle retail sales in June were 1.602 million units, a significant drop of 23.2% when compared to the same month the previous year. Nevertheless, this was a 6.1% improvement from the prior month.

High Oil Prices Impacting Gasoline Vehicle Sales

The major contributing factor to the market's downturn has been the fall in sales of gasoline vehicles. The rising oil prices have severely impacted these sales, with a sharp decline of 39% in June compared to the same month the previous year.

Breaking it down further, the sale of pure gasoline vehicles decreased by 42%, while hybrid models only saw a 7% drop. It's clear that high oil prices and a shift in consumer preferences are speeding up the transition to electric vehicles.

Glimpse into the NEV Market

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) continue to be the backbone of the NEV market. BEV retail sales were 685,000 units in June, an increase of 3.6% from the previous year and 7.4% from May.

Retail sales of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) were at 241,000 units, a decline of 27.3% from the previous year. Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREVs) retail sales were 82,000 units, a drop of 31.9% from the previous year.

Surge in NEV Exports

Despite the decline in retail sales, NEV exports experienced a substantial increase. June saw total exports of 499,000 units, an impressive rise of 152.7% compared to the same month the previous year and a 17.6% increase from May. This made up a record 56.9% of total passenger vehicle exports, a rise of 15.9 percentage points from the previous year.

Passenger vehicle exports overall were also robust. Exports in June were 877,000 units, an 82.3% increase from the previous year and making up 37% of manufacturers' sales.

Leading NEV Manufacturers

In terms of company performance, one manufacturer has continued to maintain its absolute market dominance in the NEV market. The company's domestic NEV retail sales reached 224,478 units in June.

Other key players in the market also posted strong sales. One of them reported NEV retail sales of 107,951 units, and another had sales of 72,376 units.

Two other notable manufacturers recorded domestic NEV retail sales of 66,900 units and 52,920 units, respectively, in June.

Surprising to see PHEVs and EREVs dropping so much while BEVs hold steady—are folks just skipping right over hybrids these days, or is something else discouraging those sales? The export boom almost feels like a hedge against domestic uncertainty.
