Cynthia Erivo Calls Out Racism After Protecting Ariana Grande from Red Carpet Intruder

Red Carpet Encounter Sparks Discussion on Racial Bias

A recent encounter experienced by renowned actress Cynthia Erivo has ignited conversations on racial biases. The incident, which took place during a red carpet event, has been described as a disturbing invasion of personal space. Erivo stated that the reaction to her stepping in to protect a fellow actress from a red carpet intruder exposed an underlying issue related to the perception of Black women.

A Terrifying Experience on the Red Carpet

Erivo and her fellow actress were caught off guard when an individual, identified as Johnson Wen, breached security barriers and made an unwarranted approach. The two actresses were left frightened as bystanders didn't react immediately. Erivo sprung into action, attempting to push Wen away. "The man simply refused to let go," Erivo recalled. "So I took it upon myself to ensure he let go and left us alone."

Erivo was quick to point out the importance of personal space, stating that "it doesn’t belong to anyone, even if you feel you know the person." Wen, known for causing disturbances at public gatherings, was later sentenced to nine days in jail.

Social Media Reaction: A Misunderstanding or a Deep-Rooted Bias?

The incident sparked a significant reaction online, with many suggesting that Erivo was acting as a "bodyguard" for her fellow actress. Erivo challenged this notion, indicating that it is an example of the negative stereotypes often associated with Black women.

"The assumption was that because of my physical appearance—my physique, my bald head, the fact that I'm bigger than my co-star—I had to be in control or protective. This couldn't be further from the truth," she said. "I believe the reaction would have been different if the roles had been reversed."

A Negative Impact on Professional Aspirations

The aftermath of the incident has had a profound impact on Erivo. She shared that she felt as though her humanity was reduced and distorted, which discouraged her from pursuing an Oscar campaign for her latest film. The film, a sequel to a box office hit that grossed over $765 million worldwide and won two Oscars, has had a less impressive performance, earning $541 million and receiving no Oscar nominations.

"I felt like a natural, instinctive action had been twisted into something it was not because of prevalent assumptions about women who look like me," expressed Erivo. "I didn't want to be part of that."

Erivo felt she didn't deserve to endure such an experience. "I didn't want to put myself through it. It's disheartening that such an incident has to overshadow my professional achievements," she stated.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that unconscious biases persist in our society, even on the glamorous red carpets of Hollywood. It calls for introspection and a conscious effort to challenge and change such deep-rooted perceptions.
