Eighteen wounded as explosions rock Damascus during Macron’s visit to Syria

Explosions Shake Damascus During Presidential Visit, Leaving Eighteen Injured

An unexpected eruption of two explosive devices in Damascus, the capital of Syria, has resulted in injuries to at least 18 individuals. This incident coincided with the visit of the French President to the nation.

Among those injured were four police officers, as reported by the country's Interior Ministry. The incidents have sent shockwaves through the city, with billowing clouds of smoke visible and a vehicle set ablaze.

Location of the Blasts

The explosions took place near the Ministry of Tourism and a hotel, where the French President was expected to reside during his stay. However, the French President's office confirmed that he did not hear the blasts and his visit proceeded as planned.

The Interior Ministry assured that the blasts happened outside the security zone designated for the French President's residence, posing no direct threat to the residence or the official visit programme. The schedule proceeded as initially outlined.

The Explosive Devices

Initial analysis points towards the devices being improvised and planted in two locations - inside a vehicle parked along the roadside and concealed in a trash container. The explosives detonated post their discovery by the security forces, who had dispatched specialists to dismantle them.

Investigations are currently ongoing to understand the event's circumstances and identify the perpetrators.

Security Measures and Aftermath

Despite stringent security measures in place, particularly considering this was the first visit by a European leader since the earlier government fell in 2024, the explosions still occurred. An expert from the presidential palace shared that the situation is currently stable and calm.

The incident underscores the fragility and sensitivity of the country's security situation. A security official condemned the explosions as a criminal act, considering they occurred in an area bustling with civilians.

A Damascus-based security expert stated that while the targets of the explosive devices remain unclear, the intent seems to be creating unrest and sending a negative message. Furthermore, he stressed the need to address the security gaps to avoid portraying Syria's security situation negatively.

Previous Incidents

This incident comes on the heels of a recent explosion at a cafe in central Damascus that resulted in at least 10 fatalities and 20 injuries, as confirmed by Syria's Ministry of Health.

Just last year, the French President had hosted the Syrian leader on his first official visit to a European country, which was followed by a trip to Washington to meet the US President.
