Former Music Artist's Political Party Takes the Lead in Nepal's Recent Election

A recent election in Nepal has seen a surprising turn of events, with a political party led by a former rapper making significant strides. This election is the first one to take place since a youth revolt last year.

The party, known as the National Independent, has already claimed victory in 60 out of 165 directly elected seats. Furthermore, it is leading in 61 additional constituencies, according to the results shared by the Election Commission of Nepal.

Rapper-Turned-Politician Balendra Shah

The National Independent party's candidate for prime minister is Balendra Shah. Shah, previously a well-known rapper, transitioned into politics, proving his mettle by winning the Kathmandu mayoral race in 2022. He later emerged as a prominent figure in the 2025 revolt, which resulted in the removal of the then Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli.

At 35 years old, Shah has put a spotlight on improving health and education for Nepal's impoverished citizens - the key talking points of his campaign. This focus, combined with widespread public discontent toward established political parties, propelled his campaign forward.

The former rapper went head-to-head with Oli in a southeastern district. He triumphed, securing a victory margin that was nearly four times larger than the votes received by the former Prime Minister.

Other Parties in the Election

Out of the 13 seats already announced for other parties, the Nepal Congress party and two communist parties have claimed them.

The citizens of Nepal directly elect 165 members for the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Parliament. The remaining 110 seats in the 275-member body are filled through a proportional representation system. This system assigns seats to political parties based on the percentage of votes they receive.

Although the vote counting process is still ongoing in most regions of the country, final results are anticipated within the next couple of days. The task of collecting ballot boxes from remote mountain villages in the northern parts of the country is being facilitated through the use of helicopters.

The Election's Wider Context

This election is viewed as a three-way battle, influenced by voters' frustration over rampant corruption and demands for increased government accountability.

The National Independent Party, although only established in 2022, has garnered massive support in this election. This presents a formidable challenge to the two historically dominant parties: the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal.
