The plant comprises an ammonia factory and four nitric acid plants, among other facilities. The plant has the capacity to accommodate approximately 48,000 tons of ammonia. Immediate Action Ensures Safety
Following the incident, the company responsible for the plant issued a statement confirming that all employees and contractors present at the site during the incident are safe and accounted for. This announcement came as a relief amid the chaos and panic caused by the explosion.
A local resident living about half a mile from the plant recounted his terrifying experience. He was preparing to cook with his son when a loud explosion, akin to a sonic boom or a tree falling on his house, shook their home. When he stepped outside, he saw smoke ascending from the plant and noticed a strong ammonia smell permeating the air.
The resident added that while the smell of ammonia was familiar to them, it had never been as potent as it was after the explosion. Following the incident, he and his family evacuated their home and relocated to Jackson.
Impact on Local Transportation
The immediate aftermath of the explosion also affected local transportation. A stretch of U.S. Route 49E, which lies in close proximity to the plant, was temporarily shut down to ensure the safety of motorists and to facilitate emergency response efforts.
